An experienced and talented goalkeeper who arrived at the club from Bristol Rovers on an initial loan basis during the 2009/10 season. Phillips would soon make that loan move permanent and has been a real favourite with the Gresty Road faithful since. The vocal Bristolian would make his senior debut for Bristol City in the 1998/99 season in a home game with Sheffield United and would go on to make over 300 appearances for the Ashton Gate club in all competitions, before moving across Bristol to join Bristol Rovers in the summer of 2006.
Phillips would make over 150 appearances for Rovers, winning promotion to League One via the play-offs in 2007, before making a loan move to Shrewsbury Town in 2009, before his move to the Alex. After impressing during the remainder of 2009/10 season, Phillips required surgery on both shoulders, meaning that he missed the opening months of the 2010/11 season.
Unfortunately for Phillips, he would never be able to regain his place over loan keeper Rhys Taylor, and would be limited to just two appearances throughout the campaign, but after regaining the number one shirt at the club for the 2011/12 season, Phillips would most definitely make up for lost time, playing every minute of every game, finishing as runner up in the clubs Player Of The Season vote, and helping the club to promotion to League One, again via the play-offs. Steve agreed a new contract with the club in the summer of 2012 and is now also the clubs academy goalkeeper coach.
