Chris Stokes says he cannot wait for the chance to impress when he makes his Football League debut for Crewe tomorrow. The 19-year-old left-back was signed as cover for Matt Tootle, who picked up a dead leg in Tuesday's 4-2 defeat of Grimsby. Tootle's replacement on the night, Carl Martin, was red carded and will now serve a three-match ban starting at Torquay tomorrow.
With former captain Billy Jones only returning to full training yesterday after a lengthy lay-off, the opportunity to take Stokes on loan from Bolton Wanderers is perfect timing.
Now the Trowbridge-born defender is looking to impress both Bolton and Crewe during his one-month loan deal. Stokes is out of contract in the summer at the Reebok and wants to impress Owen Coyle's new coaching staff before deciding on his next move.
On signing until 11th April, Chris told Crewe Alex Player: "I was just sat watching TV last night and had a call saying that Crewe were interested in taking me on loan. I have known of their interest for a while and now the time is right for them and me.
"I am just really excited about being given the opportunity to come to Crewe and play some games. I have played reserve football at Bolton but I am yet to make my senior debut so that is something I am really looking forward too tomorrow.
"I would imagine there will be some nerves but I am just really excited and pleased to be given the opportunity. I am sure after a long trip to Torquay I will get the opportunity to chat to a number of the lads and settle in a bit.
"I have known a lot about Dario and what he has achieved in the game. He is a recognised figure and everyone has huge respect for him. I want to come here and learn from him and hopefully impress the people at Bolton.
Chris added: "I have been a regular in the reserves for Bolton this season and it has gone relatively well. There has been a change of management there, so everyone is trying to impress again. Coming here and doing well will given me the chance to do that."
