As a striker Anthony Elding is always determined to get on the score sheet in every game he plays. It makes it even more special when any player manages to open his account for his new club on his full debut. Whatever Calvin Zola can do on a Saturday afternoon, Elding can do against Barnsley three days later!

Elding, a summer signing from Leeds, probably waited longer than he had wished for after Crewe were awarded a penalty last night as early as the 12th minute. Elding clearly wanted it but was overruled by the club's new penalty taker Michael O'Connor. The Northern Ireland International was excused training on Monday due to a funeral and Elding had confidently took them in training that day. That caused a bit of a mix-up on the pitch that was happily resolved when Crewe were then handed a second penalty ten minutes before the break!

This time Elding dispatched his spot-kick with aplomb and Crewe are now looking forward to this evening's Carling Cup 2nd round draw.

Elding told crewealex world: "It was important that the team bounced back from Saturday's result and we did that against a good side, who play a league above us. Of course, it was nice to get a goal on my first start but the most important thing was the team put in a performance and got a result.

"We played some decent stuff in the first half and gave the fans a glimpse of what we are about. I still think there is a lot to come from this side. The second half was more of a battle, but you are going to get that in a cup-tie and we stood it up to well."

On his wonderfully struck penalty, Elding admits that he wanted the first one but stepped aside when the gaffer confirmed that O'Connor was on duty.

"I'm a striker and I'm paid to score goals. When someone gives you a free shot at goal, I'm going to be there at the front of the queue!

"The gaffer said Michael was on penalties and I stepped aside. I told him that if we get another one then I'm having it!

"We did and it was nice to see it go in. I don't care if they fly into the top corner, or go through the goalkeepers legs, as long as they go into the net."
