Jones: Disappointing End To The Season
Crewe Alexandra's left-back Billy Jones has had plenty to celebrate recently after his partner gave birth to the happy couple's first child, but after making his comeback from a knee injury on Saturday, Jones was far from happy to have ended the season in such a negative way.
Crewe were hammered 4-1 by Oldham on the final day and needed results elsewhere to confirm our safety in League One and a disappointing Jones told us that after not doing ourselves justice everyone at the club was mightily relived inside the Alex dressing room when news of Bournemouth's result filtered through.
Jones told the Crewe Alex World: "It was a hugely disappointing way to end the season. We wanted to be concentrating on ourselves and ended up being beaten 4-1 at home. Oldham looked stronger than us and perhaps the occasion got to some of us, all of us. It is difficult to put our fingers on because we have being playing reasonably well under pressure for a number of weeks now.
"We hate to be losing at any time of the season, but we let ourselves down today, because of what was at stake. Somebody came into the dressing room to tell us that Bournemouth had drawn and that we were safe. Although we were pleased to have stayed up, there was no elation. It was more relief than anything.
"I think the lads on the bench knew the other two were drawing going into the final few minutes, then Cheltenham scored, so it was a nervous few minutes for everyone. I must say the supporters here were fantastic. They stuck with us and their support was brilliant all afternoon.
He added: "The most important thing is that we are safe. That was our priority going into the last few games and we have managed to do that. It has not been a good season for us and we know that but we have got to draw a line under this season and crack on for next year."
