Defender who joined Crewe Alexandra on a two and a half year contract in October 2009 from non-league Wealdstone, but injury hindered his progress into the first team. He started with a hamstring issue and just as he thought he was to create an impression on Dario Gradi an ankle problem flared up. He returned to full training in December 2009 forcing his way back in to Dario's plans. An unfortunate experience for Carl saw him get his first red card of his career, but it was something he readily admits he learnt a lot from. Having got himself back in the side after his suspension, injury hit once more to prematurely end his season.

The defender joined the Alex originally over the summer of 2009 on a trial basis, spending three weeks with the club, but at the time former manager Gudjon Thordarson decided to let him go. Carl then trained with the likes of Southend and Dagenham, and was poised to sign for the Daggers, until Dario renewed his interest in the 23-year-old and offered him the chance to join Crewe Alexandra, which he didn't think twice about.
