Giant striker who arrived at the club in the summer of 2005 on a one-year contract for a nominal fee from Northwich Victoria.

Born in Crewe, Bailey began his career in non-league football with North West Counties League outfit Nantwich Town, but impressed during a trial with Stockport County and was signed on a three-year contract by Hatters boss Carlton Palmer in 2003.

Matt cut his professional teeth at Edgeley Park and was a regular goalscorer in the reserve side, before being sent on loan to League Two outfit Scunthorpe United. He made his Football League debut at Glanford Park for Scunthorpe in a 3-1 win over Rochdale and went on to make five League and Cup appearances for the Iron before returning back to Stockport.

His County debut arrived soon after, in an LDV Vans Trophy defeat at Wrexham, but after only one more appearance was released by manager Chris Turner.

Bailey returned to non-league football for the end of the 2004/05 season by signing with Conference outfit Northwich Victoria, but trained with the Alex.

After scoring twice in an Under-18 game for the Railwaymen, he was offered a one-year contract to give him time to impress and earn a longer term contract.

Whilst Matt hasn't quite made the breakthrough to the Alex's first team squad as yet, he continued to impress the club's coaching staff and gained plenty more experience with a number of loan spells.

Bailey has headed to Conference outfit Hereford United for a month making six appearances and scoring once, and also had a spell with their Conference rivals Southport.

Bailey ended the season at Conference North side Lancaster City, playing a dozen games in a hectic schedule at the end of the campaign.

He has also experienced life at Barrow and returned to Crewe with extra vigour and could yet find a niche at centre-back after impressing in that position during a friendly clash with Derby County.

Mat also impressed on the training ground and was handed a new one-year contract in the summer.
