Centre forward who realised a dream come true in October 2005 after signing an 18-month contract with the Alex following a successful trial spell. The Stoke born youngster actually had a trial spell with the Alex's Academy as a schoolboy, but wasn't retained and looked to build his career in non-league football.
Pope began to catch the eye playing in the Midland Alliance for local side Biddulph Victoria, scoring 15 goals in his first season as a 17-year-old and 12 in the first two months of the 2005/6 campaign.
After spending the first couple of months of his Crewe career playing in the reserves and learning on the training ground, Pope eventually made some loan moves to gain more first team experience. He impressed by scoring plenty of goals for Lancaster and, after returning to Crewe, was sent out on loan to Stafford Rangers, where he finished that season.
During the 2006/2007 season Pope had a very impressive loan spell at Barrow, even scoring for them in the FA Cup against League One side Bristol Rovers before returning to Crewe.
He certainly got his wish for more involvement last season, as the 'target man' featured a total of 28 times in all competitions and striking up a partnership with Nicky Maynard. He also got his input in the goals too, ending the season with seven goals following his first at Bristol Rovers in only the second League game of the season. Although, Pope had his own injury problems, picking up a broken toe towards the end of the season, he played through the pain barrier to help the Alex to a 3-0 win over Yeovil Town in April.| Competition | Apps (as sub) |
