Steve signed for the Alex in the summer of 2008 having been released from Southend United at the end of the previous season.

Having starting his career at his hometown club, his first major club was Nottingham Forest in 2000, but having not made any appearances he later signed for Yeovil Town where he stayed for five years. A calm and assured goalkeeper, Collis joined Southend in 2006 to become their first summer signing ahead of their new campaign in the Championship.

During the 2007/2008 campaign, Steve was the number one stopper for the Blues until Christmas, when he unfortunately lost his place to Darryl Flahavan in the second half of the season. Steve joined the Alex as the new number one following the departure of Ben Williams to Carlisle United. He kept the number one spot for the first half of the season, but lost his place upon the arrival of new boss Gudjon Thordarson when the then loan keeper from Everton, John Ruddy, joined the Alex.
