Left-back Billy Jones made the step back up into the Football League in the summer of 2007 after narrowly missing out on promotion to League Two with Exeter. The Grecians narrowly lost 2-1 to Morecambe at the 'new Wembley' in the Conference Final to end their hopes of a return to the Football League but Jones' misery was soon lifted by his £65,000 move to Crewe.

The Gillingham-born youngster began his career with Leyton Orient making 79 appearances before moving onto Kidderminster in 2005. He later joined Exeter City that summer and became an important part of a back four which also included his new Alex team-mate Danny Woodards. Jones scored a commendable 17 league goals in 83 league appearances, and his defensive displays made his a strong target for league scouts.

His first season with the Alex was cut short as he picked up a knee injury on Boxing Day that required surgery and saw him sidelined until the final game of the 2007/2008 season. A good left footer who knows how to put a wicked cross into the box and is capable of causing opposing defender's problems with his supportive overlapping runs. He opened his goalscoring account against Macclesfield Town in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in September 2008.

The 2008/2009 season was a more successful one for Billy, as he captained the side on occasions and even found the goalscoring form he has had in pervious years. He netted six times in the tail end of the season, including five goals in six games.

Billy was announced as the captain of the side for the 2009/2010 season ahead of the club's first pre-season friendly in early July 2009.
