Dario Gradi criticised his players for their lack of professionalism after the red-card incident between Ashley Westwood and Luke Rodgers.

The Crewe boss ran on to the pitch to calm his players down after former striker Rodgers tangled with Westwood in added time, which saw both dismissed.

Gradi was angry Rodgers came close to escaping with a booking for his part, but was also unhappy with the way his players reacted.

He said: "It was no longer a football match. It became a farce at the end.

"The referee got it wrong and it would have been unjust, but we've got to grow up and be more professional.

"Afterwards I told the players you don't win football matches by losing your heads."

Mike Edwards insists Luke Rodgers's red card will not derail the Magpies' promotion push. Sub Rodgers kicked out at Ashley Westwood as this gritty battle turned nasty in injury-time. An ugly melee erupted and former Crewe striker Rodgers and Westwood both saw red.

Edwards said: "We will pull together and keep grinding out results to ensure we meet our promotion target."

Luke Rodgers came off the bench and promptly caused mayhem at his former club. Unfortunately, it was not the sort County boss Steve Cotterill was looking for. The livewire striker missed a sitter then sparked a ruck with Alex's Ashley Westwood, 19, which ended with coaching staff on the pitch and the scrapping pair seeing red.

It was easy to forget among the ugly scenes that the Magpies stretched their unbeaten run to eight games and climbed to second in the table thanks to Mike Edward's second half goal.

Cotterill said: "It was a good game that we deserve to win but it's a shame because the last five minutes has overshadowed it all. I was going to bring Ade Akinbiyi on but decided to go for Luke as he had more games and I thought he had more in the tank.

"In hindsight it was the wrong decision and I wish I had gone for Ade. There was no need for the referee to red card either of the lads, a yellow card would have sufficed."

Ugly scenes overshadowed Notts County's victory as Luke Rodgers and Ashley Westwood both saw red in injury time. Mike Edwards struck his third goal of the season as the Magpies extended their unbeaten run to eight games.

But the game came to a troubled end when former Crewe hitman Rodgers booted Westwood and a ruck ensued.

Crewe boss Dario Gradi said: "Luke attacked him in my opinion and Westwood should not have retaliated."
