Colchester are considering an appeal against Steven Gillespie's red card after they were swept aside by Crewe. The club's £400,000 record signing saw red for a two-footed challenge on Danny Woodards, but manager Geraint Williams will study the incident.
He said: "Steven said he went in one-footed that stuck on the ball and pushed through on the lad' ankle, but we will have to see it again on video to decide if we can appeal"
The U's were in lacklustre form as Michael O'Connor and Tom Pope secured three points for Crewe.
Alex boss Steve Holland said: "I've seen enough to suggest we are going to have a better season than a few people think."

Tom Pope came off the bench to show up sulking striker Anthony Elding. Ineffective Elding made no secret of his disappointment at being taken off by coach Steve Holland, snatching his tracksuit and sitting with a face like thunder by a corner flag.
But he was left red-faced when replacement Tom Pope took just three minutes to score.

Goals from Michael O'Connor and Tom Pope secured the win over Colchester United. O'Connor curled in a free kick before Pope, a substitute headed in a cross by Billy Jones. Steve Gillespie, the Colchester forward, was sent off three minutes from time.
"The result was massive for us, Steve Holland, the Crewe Alexandra said: "That's five home wins on the bounce and our first clean sheet in the league."
