Former Alex favourite Nicky Maynard ended up red-faced on his return to Gresty Road. All eyes were on the striker who was back after his £2.25 million summer move to Bristol City. But the League One Railwaymen stole the limelight.

Anthony Elding curled a superb goal past Chris Weale and midfielder Byron Moore slotted in the 76th minute. Three minute later Brian Wilson score a 25-yard screamer to give City a lifeline but Crewe clung on.

Dejected Bristol City manager Gary Johnson declared his side had done "too little too late," after they fell in the second round of the Carling Cup to League One Crewe Alexandra.

Johnson was dismayed by the performance after watching the same side that despatched Coventry at the weekend lose 2-1 at the Alexandra Stadium to a Crewe side who were simply better than them.

He said: "We didn't play well and the winning side deserved to win it. We never really got into the game until the last 10 minutes. Their two forwards looked quite lively and we couldn't handle that."
