DG: "The club is in safe hands"

Posted on: Mon 11 Dec 2006

Dario Gradi

Dario Gradi has backed chairman John Bowler and his board of directors to continue to look look after the best interests of Crewe Alexandra Football Club.

The Alex boss has told Crewe Alex World that he believes that the Football Club is in 'safe hands' after the recent EGM ratified plans to move the club's commerical interests forward, whilst protecting it's assets.

"I think the supporters of Crewe are lucky in a way," Dario told Crewe Alex World

"That's because the people who run the Football Club are all Crewe supporters. The Chairman, for example, has been here longer than I have been here, although not as Chairman, and he literally works for nothing. In fact it costs him to be here because he doesn't even claim expenses.

"None of the board take any money from the club and none of them would sell up and move on to another club like entreprenuers. If a Russian oil tycoon came in and the board thought it was in the clubs best interests to sell, then they would but they wouldn't move on and set up at another club somewhere else.

"I think that's a rare situation because virtually everyone else who buys a Football Club, possibly with the exception of Abramovich, are using it as a business opportunity and many of them are borrowing money to do so.

"So I think our club is in safe hands."

Dario did reveal however that he foresees a difficult financial future for the Alex, who are projected to make a £1.6 million loss this season, as they transfer market continues to change.

"We are going to have a difficult time to survive because of the financial climate. Therefore we have to go where our players take us by selling on our kids and recruiting players from non-league, such as Luke Varney, and improving them.

"If Luke Varney goes for a few bob then we can't suddenly splash out half of that money on his replacement. I think it is impossible for us to budget within our means without selling players."
