Zola Was Very Professional

Posted on: Tue 16 Mar 2010

Dario Gradi has told the club's official web-site that his leading goalscorer Calvin Zola was 'very good' after being substituted after coming on as a substitute. Zola had replaced the injured winger Byron Moore early on in the 1-1 draw with Torquay United but was later taken off again as Dario elected to try and hurt Torquay more with pace than height.

Zola, who has only recently returned from an ankle injury, accepted the decision and the switch worked with Shaun Miller creating the equalising goal for Clayton Donaldon with a forceful run and clever back heal.

Dario explained to the club's official web-site: "It wasn't easy for Calvin because no substitute likes to be substituted but I think he understood the decision.

"I was getting some stick from the supporters, who felt that I didn't know what I was doing and they are entitled to do that, but I think in the end I was proved right because Calvin was finding it hard to get into it.

"He has only just come back from injury and was finding it difficult to get hold of it, so I decided to go with pace rather than utilise his height. Shaun and Clayton combined very well for the goal and in the last ten minutes it was mostly us in their half.

"I spoke to Calvin afterwards to apologise because it is not nice - but saying that I would make the decision again if I thought it would benefit the team. He accepted the decision because he isn't stupid and knew that we had changed it for a reason and that it had worked. It is a team game and he was very good about it considering."
