Set-Plays Need To Become Dangerous

Posted on: Wed 03 Mar 2010

Crewe Alexandra boss is keeping his fingers crossed that Calvin Zola makes it through the week unscathed to not only have more of a target man to aim for in open play but also improve our chances at set-plays!

Dario has revealed his frustration in his side's lack of a threat from corners and free-kicks going into the opposition penalty area. Crewe have struggled to make set-plays count this season and the boss is striving for a vast improvement.

Dario told crewealex.net: "Hopefully we will have Zola fit and available this weekend. He has been training as well as I ever seen him train. If he is fit he will play.

"Calvin gives us something different because of his height and his movement has improved. I think all our forwards have improved and Zola arguably the most. When he first came here, he used to back into the centre-halves and hold the ball up and never be anywhere near the box.

"His movement has got a lot better and he is capable of scoring different sorts of goals. He could score more with his head but his goal return this season has been very good.

"It will good to have him back for the set-plays at both ends of the pitch as well. He is another one to aim for because we do have a lot of corners and free-kicks but do not threaten the goal enough.

Dario added: "We are not blessed with great attacking headers of the ball. We could do with someone emerging as someone up there, who is prepared to get in there and get his head on things. We need to become more dangerous from set-plays."
