Dario Gradi has told the club's official web-site that he wasn't surprised that Ashley Westwood helped change the game after moving into midfield at the weekend. Westwood started the game at left-back, but was moved into a more familiar midfield role as Crewe attempted to fight back from 2-1 down. Westwood who had himself opened the scoring with a well executed free-kick from the edge of the box after 15 minutes then broke forward from the right hand side of midfield to drill home an equaliser.
Dario was pleased with the contribution made by his versatile youngster as Simon Walton scored a wonderful winner to seal three great points for the Railwaymen.
Dario told crewealex.net: "It was nice to see Westy on the scoresheet. He got his first from a well taken free-kick and he should have done better with a couple more too. It is something he can still work on and improve. We will get him practicing them more often.
"I was not surprised with his second goal and that is why I moved him into that position because he can get forward and is a terrific striker of the ball. He plays the role with a bit more confidence than Luke (Murphy) because he played the position a lot in the Youth team.
"Luke played well in periods and can be a threat there so we have a number of options, because our young players can play a variety of different positions."
