Now being used in his preferred position as centre-forward, Byron Moore is beginning to show the potential the club staff always thought he had. Moore, 21, has endured a stop-start start to his Alex career but amazingly he has already made over 100 appearances for the first-team. He has been used prominently as a winger in the past, but Dario Gradi is keen to give the Stoke-on-Trent born youngster an opportunity to show what he can do through the middle.
Moore was at his most dangerous at Burton Albion on Friday night, having two one-on-ones saved but he still kept himself going to play a huge part in creating the winning goal for Clayton Donaldson. Substitute Donaldson may have claimed the goal by applying the final touch on the line but Moore deserved much of the credit for his run and composure in the box when rounding the Burton goalkeeper.
Dario Gradi was certainly pleased that Moore is finally beginning to threaten the goal more: "Byron was a constant threat on Friday and really the winning goal was his with what he did in the build up. I know Clayton got the final touch but no-one should ignore the contribution Byron made.
"The positive thing from our point of view is that Byron had three shots on goal and should have scored. Previously when he has played up front he hadn't threatened the goal at all. He had three decent efforts, two were on his left foot and were saved and the third created the winning goal.
"The good thing he was in there and caused problems with his pace by getting in behind then.
"I spoke with their manager (Paul Peschisolido) at the end of the game and he had told me that he was relieved that Donaldson and Zola didn't play. He said that they found them a handful at our place.
"He then told me that he found Miller and Moore just as much of a handful, so that goes to show we have some decent strikers here."
