Step In The Rght Direction For Defenders

Posted on: Wed 17 Feb 2010

Dario Gradi admits that one of the most pleasing aspects from our away win at Burton on Friday was the performance of his two centre-halves, Harry Worley and Danny O'Donnell. With captain Mat Mitchel-King recently ruled out with an ankle injury, the two of them have formed a partnership over recent games and arguably produced their finest display at the Pirelli Stadium in that much-needed 2-1 win.

Crewe had to weather a bit of a storm from the home side towards the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half but with the back four looking assured and competitive, we slowly regrouped and got a later winner through substitute Clayton Donaldson.

Whilst the forwards may have grabbed the headlines by looking dangerous, Dario has praised the improvement in his central defenders.

Dario told the club's official web-site: "I thought the two centre-halves played well on Friday night. It is them that I was most worried about in trying to contain their two forwards, who are decent but they were excellent.

"There is room for improvement in all of them but they played very well and looked good physically. They didn't want to concede a second goal and you could see that in their play.

"If I had quick centre-halves who scored goals and headed everything then they wouldn't be here for five minutes.

"We have got defenders who can improve all aspects of their play and they are working hard to do so."
