Steven Schumacher and Danny Shelley are unlikely to feature in Sunday's opening friendly match at Newcastle Town as they aim to recover from injury. Midfielder Schumacher is still not 100% per cent fit after suffering a knee injury against Leeds United in March. Although the former Bradford City man is involved in the full training sessions, Gudjon Thordarson is unlikely to risk him so early into the pre-season.
Schumacher will be hopeful of playing some part in the upcoming pre-season matches as he attempts to establish himself in the Crewe midfield.
Youngster Shelley has a muscle strain with the nerve affecting part of his knee joint. The Staffordshire-born youngster has had to withdraw from recent training sessions and will not feature at the Lyme Valley Stadium this weekend.
Thordarson is looking to start with his first eleven and introduce a number of substitutes in the second half at Newcastle. New first-year professionals Matt Tootle and Alex Titchiner may be included in the travelling squad after signing their deals on July 1st.
Gudjon Thordarson is also likely to give a couple of trialists a chance to impress ahead of the new season. Both would be free agents.
