Alex Miss Out On European Target

Posted on: Fri 03 Jul 2009

Gudjon Thordarson has revealed that he missed out on potential signing this morning. The club's Icelandic coach had been in negotiations with the European based player for the past two weeks - but a conclusion on the deal appears very unlikely after the player expressed a desire to give his options open. The p[layer can play central defender or in central midfield but feels he can go higher than League Two in England.

Thordarson has been working diligently in the European market and he is close to bringing in a Scandinavian trilalist ahead of the club's first pre-season match of the season at Newcastle Town on Sunday. He has also targeted two British-based players for a trial and if it coems off they could be at the Lyme Valley Stadium on Sunday.

Thordarson told the club's official web-site: "It was a close call this morning because we have been talking to a player for the past two weeks trying to convince him to come to this country. He is playing in Europe and I thought he would be a good signing for us.

"I told him that Crewe is the ideal place to come if you want to get noticed. You only have to see Michael (O'Connor) interesting Championship clubs and John (Brayford) is the same. If you do well here you tend to get noticed and perhaps for foreign players this is a good platform.

"We were close to convincing him, but the talks have now broken down because he wants to keep him options open. Financially, we couldn't quite offer what he was looking for and he feels he can get a bigger club than Crewe.

"That is only natural and it is going to happen because you are never going to sign every player you go after. I still won't rush things because we have 20 players here already and I'm only looking to add real quality to the squad.

"I know the quality I am after and I know what my budget is and how we have to work. There are a lot of players out there who have been sorted and it is up to me to pick the quality ones and try and bring them here.

"The player we went for had those qualities but it hasn't quite worked out. You just have to move on and go to the next one. There are still two or three we are considering, so we'll have to see what happens there."
