Got To Take Our Positives Forward
Steve Holland is hoping that his side can take the positives from the victory over Barnsley in the Carling Cup and even some of our attacking play against Carlisle until Saturday's home encounter with Walsall.
Crewe Alexandra have had an indifferent start to the season, producing some fine football against Championship side Barnsley, but looking vulnerable at the back against Brighton and Carlisle. It is team game and it is unfair to point the finger of blame at the back four and goalkeeper Steve Collis, because when pushing forward with two wide men, the Alex back line has lacked protection on occasions.
It is getting that balance right and at Carlisle on Saturday, if Crewe had taken their chances it really could have been a thrilling 4-4 draw or even better for the Railwaymen. It was that sort of game and Holland will be working on his side not being so open when they face the Saddlers this weekend.
Steve Holland told the club's official web-site: "We have to try to build on what we achieved against Barnsley at Carlisle and we did create a lot of chances. We were pleased with the way we attacked but we need to be more clinical in front of goal.
"We have had two difficult games to open our league season. We knew that playing Brighton and then Carlisle, two teams who were in the top eight last season was going to be a test.
"We wanted to see where we were and the players are well aware that our record against the top teams in this League has not been good. We got one win over a top eight side last - Brighton on the opening day - and that has got to improve if we want to be competitive.
"I hate looking at the League table. It is still early days but we are bottom and I am fed up of seeing us there already. It is important that we get that first win in the league as soon as possible and start moving up the league."
