Pressure Comes With Every Game
Steve Holland knows that modern day football revolves around instant results more than ever, but the first-team coach isn't pushing the panic button at the Alexandra Stadium. Crewe have endured a tough opening start to their league campaign with Brighton and Carlisle inflicting league defeats on his new look side, but there has been plenty of positives which should see us blend as a team before too long.
The new signings have settled in well, with the likes of goalkeeper Steve Collis, Joel Grant, Anthony Elding and Calvin Zola already establishing as firm favourites with the Alex fans. Hopefully, the newest arrival Clayton Donaldson will follow suit with a flurry of goals and good performances.
Holland knows he has had a baptism of fire, facing two clubs who finished in the top 8 of this division last season, and although disappointed not to register a first league point, there has already been signs of improvement, especially in an attacking sense.
Steve told the club's official web-site: "We knew it was going to be a tough opening for us because we have played two sides, who we believe are going to be challenging for promotion this season. Carlisle are currently top of the league and Brighton would have been there with them if they hadn't conceded a late penalty on Saturday.
"We have been disappointed with some of the goals we have conceded and we are fully aware there is work to be done, but it certainly isn't a time for doom and gloom here.
"As managers you know that you can be a hero one week and zero the next. We had a disappointing result against Brighton, conceding in the last minute but the players responded superbly and put on a great performance against Barnsley.
"It can all change very quickly, and we have to find that winning formula and have the players making better decisions.
"Criticism is part and parcel of football now and it doesn't matter what you may have done in the past or even in the last game. Simon Davey took Barnsley to an FA Cup semi-final last season and there is apparently pressure on him.
"Mark Hughes had a bad result in Europe and was instantly under pressure according to the newspapers. It is the same with Walter Smith, who went out of the Champions League. Last season he took Rangers to the UEFA Cup Final but that is quickly forgotten.
"You have to take the positives with the negatives and when it can change like the wind with a couple of good results."
