15 minutes after the kick off in Quorn, a bit nearer home and the clock started at Biddulph Victoria.
New keeper Steve Collis was the man in goal making his debut in Crewe colours in a game that started on almost even playing field, with Crewe just edging with the most possession and better attack.
Six minutes in and the first chance of the game fell to Shaun Miller after some good work from Tom Pope. Pope stole the ball from his former club and fed Miller in to the penalty box for a shot that went wide. Biddulph were not giving in too easily under the pressure though and fought back on the attack, only for their effort to scampered by Steve Collis who calmly caught the ball with no effort as it rolled towards his feet. Less than five minutes later and another chance for the visitors as Byron Moore sent a good strike just inches wide of the post.
Crewe looked back on top as they fought for the first goal of the game and that was how it continued. 16 minutes had passed and another chance came for Miller thanks to more good work from the Pope. The Pope and Miller partnership seems to be getting off to a good start. The two local lads combined well together, for what ended as a shot just wide of the target. Minutes later though and the first goal came around. The Biddulph keeper was caught out of his goal as Baudet sent a header down to Pope who wasted no time in sending his shot into the back of the net from 10 yards out, putting the better over his former club.
Following that, an own goal from the home side almost made it two as in an effort to clear the ball missed his own net by inches. Pope found himself another chance but wasted his effort firing at the waiting defender, however, Rix was on hand to get on the end of the rebound and just miss the target. Crewe were powering forward as the middle of the first half approached.
Biddulph were tying to get forward, but their efforts were stopped each time by a well-placed defence. A good run by Byron Moore started another attack, a cross ball to Mark Carrington who sent the ball into the box to an unmarked and waiting Byron Moore. With time on his side, he took his time to shoot but the keeper made a good save although dropped the ball at the feet of Miller who just couldn't get his feet quick enough to put the ball over the line. Another chance right in front of goal arose just seconds later, but the whistle blew for off side as Mark Carrington's shot went over the crossbar.
Carrington tried his luck again just after 30 minutes from 22 yards, and it was a good effort that the keeper had his eye on and dove to catch it as it approached the bottom corner.
10 minutes from the half time whistle and Miller hit the post with a fantastic header.Luke Danville provided the initial ball down the wing to Byron Moore who put the cross on to the header of Miller. A fantastic opportunity for 2-0.
It was soon to happen though, as Steven Schumacher put in a great cross to Baudet who beat his man to the header to place the ball perfectly at the feet of McCready who calmly tapped the ball over the line. Crewe were certainly looking the dominant side now.
Miller put a great through ball to Carrington just from the kick off, who almost beat the keeper with a powerful shot from 15 yards out, it was a good save though and some good reflexes from the Biddulph keeper saw him pick up the dropped ball.
Biddulph were on the fight back though, as they sent a curling shot towards Collis. At the other end of the field, Moore was presented with a good opportunity but couldn't position his foot at the right angle to guide the ball into the net.
Five minutes were remaining on the clock, and it had been a first half packed with some good football from Crewe. The attacking from Crewe went on until the whistle blew for the break, for a first half that saw a handful of chances for the visitors and hardly a test for keeper Steve Collis.
It was a quiet start to the second half, with neither side having a clear cut opportunity until on 52 minutes Mark Carrington was in the right place to be on the end of a Ben Rix ball, but was beaten by the keeper just in front of goal. For his first game back from injury, Rix was playing some good football and really getting involved in the game.
Calls for handball went up later, as Tom Pope put a ball into the box for Schumacher, but the ref waved on any shouts for a penalty.
As the hour mark approached, a free kick was awarded to Biddulph just 20 yards out. As Crewe lined up on the defence, the shot was taken but wasted as it sailed over Collis' cross bar.
For the second time in the game, Crewe hit the post, this time it was Pope, and it was quickly followed by a perfect opportunity for Schumacher as Moore crossed the ball. The scouser was waiting just in front of goal, and after a battle with the ball, put it over the line for goal number three. A fourth almost followed from the kick off, as Moore saw his shot tipped over thanks to the quick thinking of the Biddulph stopper. As it stood though, Collis still stood with hardly a challenge on his goal.
Just past an hour had been played, and a great shot of Schumacher came as he sent a powered shot straight at the keeper, who pushed it wide. Some new legs came into midfield as Ben Rix was replaced by Colin Daniel and it didn't take him long to get stuck in to the game as he found his way forward into the right of the box. There was no one to receive his pass though and the ball was eventually cleared.
As the second half continued, Biddulph brought themselves back into the game as they fought back to the pressure from Crewe. Daniel again took the ball forward and into the box, losing his man on the way. As he passed the ball into the path of Tom Pope, the former Biddulph man sent his effort wide.
Neil Baker made his final two subs of the night as a trialist Nick replaced Baudet and Moore made way for Chris Clements.
Some good play from Daniel, Clements and Miller worked downfield, but their efforts were wasted as the final pass went too far forward for Clements to reach before meeting the keeper.
Not satisfied with three goals, Crewe were pushing on for more with just 15 minutes remaining on the clock. Schumacher fed Clements with the ball but Miller could not get on the end of Clements pass. It didn't matter though as Colin Daniel out away the fourth goal of the game from a corner, quickly followed by a fifth by Miller. He intercepted a Biddulph pass and took on the keeper on his own, slotted it nicely past him as he dove to the floor.
Five goals scored and still 12 minutes to go.
The good work between Clements and Miller continued as the two took on the keeper with some good football, but Clements was ruled offside just as he slid the ball over the line.
Some good defending from James Bailey in the final ten minutes of the game saw Biddulph's push forward stopped and Crewe were back on the attack. Five minutes from time and Daniel was back on the attack, racing down the wing and around his man. Providing the cross for Pope, who's header was saved, Clements was on to the rebound though and a quick save from the keeper once again prevented a sixth goal.
A foul on Carrington on the edge of the box was awarded a kick taken by Schumacher, but despite being a fantastic strike he hit the bar.
It was a good game for Crewe in the end, who saw the best part of the possession and dominated the game and in the final seconds of the game, Pope again headed at the crossbar.
As the final whistle blew, a convincing 5-0 victory was taken home by the visitors.
