Dario Gradi hailed hat-trick hero Ryan Lowe as the clubs best finisher after the Alex ran riot at home to Carlisle United.

Despite going a goal down when Karl Hawley opened the scoring in the first half, a Ryan Lowe hat-trick and a brace from Luke Varney secured the Railwaymen a stunning win against Neil MacDonald's promotion chasers.

And the Alex boss was full of praise for the recalled Lowe, who scored a poachers goal, a second with a stunning piece of skill and a fantastic free-kick.

"Ryan is the best finisher at the club in practise," Dario told Crewe Alex World after the final whistle

"It's just a question of whether we can get that out of him in the games.

"We told him before the game that we didn't want him taking people on and trying to go past them, but we wanted him to be getting himself into the box. That's what he did. His second goal was a great piece of skill, but also a fantastic ball from Billy Jones in the build up.

"After Tuesday night the Chairman asked me, in the nicest possible way, why we were playing long balls forward and wouldn't we be better playing balls into the forwards' feet. Well I'm not sure about that because I think we need to be playing better long balls for our forwards because we have pace up there with Nicky (Maynard) and Luke (Varney).

"That ball from Billy was the perfect ball and resulted in an exceptional goal."

DG also had good words for Billy's defensive work.

"Billy did a terrific job on Karl Hawley," Dario said

"I've not seen him play before, but he was definitely their danger man and Billy marked him really well until he eventually he went off injured."

With Lowe, Maynard and Varney all in exciting form up front, DG also felt his side looked extremely dangerous

"It's an exciting way to play and I think it's something we can do at home," Dario said

"Whether we can do it against Manchester United is another matter however. But I thought our three in midfield outplayed Carlisle's three in the end and that was perhaps the key to it."
