Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has praised his side for the way they ground out a hard-fought 2-0 win over Accrington Stanley. For long periods of the game, Crewe struggled to get going against their League Two rivals, but goals from substitute and Max Clayton and Luke Murphy gave Crewe the win.
Steve was delighted with the impact of Clayton, but equally delighted with the way his side limited chances for the visitors, something that Steve felt was crucial to helping the Alex to their fourth home win on the bounce.
Generally though Steve was happy to gain an important result, when not producing an exceptional display. Steve told crewealex.net: "It was a good win and a good result. I have said to the players that the result is more important than the performance and while the performance wasn't particularly good tonight the result was.
"The pleasing thing from the game tonight is the way the lads kept going and believed they could get that goal. Max came on and did exactly what I asked him to do and got a goal, so fair play to him. Nick has got going at the end as well when he has had a little more space and Murph showed great composure to score the second.
"We were struggling early on, it was a stop start game with the ball in the air a lot, but gradually as the game went on I think we got going, and we had to change the shape a few times to get that winning formula.
"I think the players adapted really well to that and sometimes you have to wait until late on for the goals to come and that is what we did. I wouldn't have been happy with a draw tonight and I am glad the goals came late on."
