Dario: "Defending Still Has To Improve"

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

Dario Gradi was none too pleased with the defending and Carl Martin's high tackle and red card as Crewe finally finished off a spirted Grismby Town side in stoppage time. Goals from wingers Bryon Moore, Joel Grant, Ash Westwood and Clayton Donaldson.

After a deserved 4-2 win, Dario told crewealex.net: "I don't think entertaining is the word for that game, you could say it was entertaining if you weren't involved in wanting to win the game. I said to the lads at half time. I think they felt a bit like they had been kicked below the belt a couple of times, we should have been four or five up and we went in at 2-2.

"They were soft goals to concede, and the goalkeeper made a good save as well, but I think it's clear to see we have a problem defending and a problem in the air. Mat did fine though, probably better than I expected and Danny was better too.

"Westy scored a terrific goal and took it very well, and it's about time he scored one he's missed a few chances recently!

"I am pleased with the players, but I'm annoyed with Carl Martin. I told him not to run with the ball, and he won't play for us again until I can trust him to do what I'm telling him.

"He is an intelligent guy and he was doing very well until then, but it's annoying because he could have cost us the game.

"Joel tucked his goal away nicely as well, he's like the other strikers in that he can score and he can miss, you never know, and on a night when we had that many chances it's nice to see him put one away. We probably scored less than 50% of our chances tonight.

"The midfield players I'm more than happy with, they are everything they should be. They know there jobs, stop and make goals and I'm very pleased with them. I'm not upset with Simon but sometimes he plays with his emotions more than his head.

He added: "It's good to have that home win though, that's three games unbeaten now, and we have to get that run started. We should be winning games like that so hopefully this is the start of it."
