Gudjon: "We Threw Our Chance Away"
Gudjon Thordarson says his Crewe Alexandra will have to improve on the form we have shown in the last 10 games of this season if we are to make a mark in League Two. Leicester's 3-0 win over the Railwaymen this afternoon condemned us to relegation regardless of results elsewhere - but Thordarson is ready to take the challenge on next season. Can Crewe bounce back at the first time of asking?
After the club's 3-0 defeat, Gudjon told the club's official web-site: "It is very disappointing, very disappointing. When I came in January, I knew it was going to be a tough ask to escape relegation and we just lacked the strength in the final push to finish it off. In my view I thought we had enough to do the job but we threw our chance away because it went out of our hands.
"We did well in January and February and looked to be on the right path but it wasn't meant to be in the end and I don't think there are any significant reason for that. We couldn't cope with a few injuries and suspensions and some decisions didn't go for us, but people will look at that and think they are excuses.
"We now have a massive task on hands and we need to improve things both on-and-off the pitch. I am ready for it and I need everyone at the football club working hard and taking us in the right direction. I need them with me because this isn't a one man band here."
And on today's opponents Leicester City, Gudjon was suitably impressed by his former assistant manager's title winning side as they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
Gudjon told us: "It was fairly obvious that Leicester were the better side. They were better in all departments and had quality players in every position. They got into our faces right away and you can see why they are the best team in this league.
"We didn't help ourselves either getting caught in possession close to our goal and when we were they punished us. They were lethal in their finishing and it was a lesson for us.
"Now we are relegated we have a really tough battle on our hands but we have to raise ourselves and tackle what is put in front of us.
The Alex boss added: "We will be going to not so good stadiums and play on not so good pitches and coming down we will probably be one of the favourites to go up, so everyone will be wanting to beat Crewe. We have to be ready for the challenge and that will come with hard work and commitment."
