David Vaughan

Posted on: Tue 15 May 2012

'Vaughany' is a product of the renowned Crewe Alexandra Academy and made his debut for the first team in 2000 at home against Blackburn Rovers. Following his debut the versatile player did not feature again in the first team until the following season when he notched up 16 appearances.

With his ability to play either at left back or midfield, his performances soon caught the eye's of the Welsh FA, making appearances for Wales under 20 and under 21's before David made his full senior International debut in the USA in 2003.

Vaughan had quickly became a popular member of the Crewe Alex squad, nicknamed the 'Welsh Wizard' by the Alex faithful, he could beat a man provide passes for the forwards and score with some spectacular long range shots.

He made over 180 league appearances for Crewe, netting 18 times, including spectacular strikes in games against Derby County and Burnley. He got his first Alex goal in an FA Cup tie against Rotherham United, a year that Crewe took Premier League side Everton to a Fifth Round Replay.

Vaughan had one of his finest hours when he produced a mesmerising run, which resulted in a Steve Jones goal against Coventry, which helped the Alex secure Championship survival on the final day of the season.

The Welsh International left Crewe in 2007, for the warmer climate of Spain and a move to Real Sociedad. The move lasted just one year, before Vaughan moved back to England and Blackpool.

In his first two seasons with the Seasiders he was a key part of the midfield which helped take Ian Holloway's side from a struggling Championship team to the Premier League. Although Vaughan, who is now a regular in the Welsh midfield, couldn't help Blackpool secure their Premier League status, he had made quite an impression in the top flight.

Ahead of the 2011/12 season Vaughan completed a move to the North East and joined Sunderland on a free transfer and will be out to continue his successful career with the North East club.
