John is one of the great players the Alex have plucked from non-league and sent on to bigger and better things.
Brayford was one of then manager, Steve Holland's first signings in September 2008 when he joined from then non-league side Burton Albion. Having progressed through the youth ranks with the Brewers, John spent time as a boy with both Manchester City and Stoke City before joining Burton. He made his professional debut two months after signing his professional forms, and was also a part of the England School's FA team.
John featured in many a position for the Alex during his time here, slotting in at left back and centre half when required as well as his natural right back position.
A full back that can score goals, John is a constant threat on goal with his runs down the flanks and scored two goals during his time with the Alex.
His performances continued to get better and better during his two years here, and in 2009 was linked to a move to Derby County to link back up with his former boss Nigel Clough. The rumours never came to fruition though, until May 2010 when in a double deal with James Bailey, Clough finally got his man in a deal that saw Brayford move to Pride Park and quickly cement his place in their starting eleven.
During the 2010/11 season, Brayford would make 48 appearances in League and Cup for Derby, scoring his only goal in a 4-1 win over Watford. Brayford excelled for the Rams, and was voted the clubs Player of the Year by the Derby supporters.
