The much-travelled winger/forward duly arrived at Crewe in the summer of 2001 from non-league side Leigh RMI. The pacy winger scored 23 goals for the Conference side in his final season at that level and after a period of transition, the goals continued to flow at the higher level for Crewe.
The pacy forward joined Crewe for the bargain price of £75,000 and went on to score 45 goals in competitions for the club during his five year spell at Gresty Road. Formerly with the likes of Bury and Blackpool, it took 'Jonah' a bit of time to adjust to life in the Championship but a brief loan spell at Rochdale was followed by his emergence as a first-team regular here.
His 13 goals in our promotion season of 2003 certainly raised his profile with the Alex faithful and it was Jonah's late winner against Coventry City on the final day of the 2004/05 season which safeguarded our status in the second tier of the English game. During that time, Steve had established himself as a Northern Ireland International where he played against the likes of Spain, Italy and Germany.
Following our relegation in 2005/06 a mass exodus occurred and Jones elected to join Burnley in the Championship after his contract had expired with us.
Following a good first season, including a dream debut against QPR where he scored both goals in a 2-0 win, in March 2008 he made a return to the Alex as a loan move after finding himself slipping down the pecking order at Burnley and suffering with injury. His second debut with the club came away at Luton Town in a crunch match for Crewe, but saw the side slip to a 2-1 defeat.
During his second spell with the club he scored his only goal for the club agianst Oldham on the final day of the season.
Jones returned to Burnley on loan but once again found his first-team chances limited and further loan moves to Huddersfield Town and Bradford City have followed. In the smmer of 2009, Steve signed a two year deal with Walsall.
The 2009/10 season for Steve saw him become a regular for Walsall, and mid-way through the season 'Jonah' netted seven goals in just eight games including a brace against Exeter in Walsall's 3-0 win.
But after falling out of favour at Walsall in the 2010/11 season, Jonah would make a loan move to the Scottish Premier League with Motherwell and score once during a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock. He would also feature in the clubs run to the Scottish F.A. Cup Final.
