Kenny Lunt

Posted on: Wed 25 May 2011

Manager Dario Gradi always described his former captain Kenny Lunt as 'a young man with an old head on his shoulders' and that summed him up perfectly. The Runcorn-born playmaker made a staggering 428 appearances in all competitions during his nine years as a professional with us. Having emerged through the Academy, Lunt was always a forward thinker and organiser. He developed into a real dead ball specialist and chipped in with a healthy 37 goals during his time at Gresty Road.

As a former graduate of the FA National School at Lilleshall, Lunt played with the likes of Michael Owen and Michael Ball. He helped Crewe to promotion in 2003 and hardly missed a match through injury or suspension although he was sent off twice at Gillingham and at home to Reading.

Lunt's long association with Crewe finally ended in the summer of 2006 after he joined Coca-Cola Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on a Bosman Free Transfer.

However, following a good first season of 40 appearances, his second year with the Owls saw him make just 8 appearances, so in a bid for regular football rejoined the Alex on loan in February 2008. As a key playmaker in midfield and helped the club survive the drop into League Two.

Lunt returned to Sheffield Wednesday but once again found his first-team chances limited under Brian Laws. He rejoined Crewe in November 2008 after Dario Gradi replaced outgoing boss Steve Holland on a short-term basis. A hernia injury halted his progress under new boss Gudjon Thordarson and he never featured again under the Icelandic boss.

Lunt was released by Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent in May 2009 and later signed for Hereford United.

His first season with Hereford United saw him help the side to a mid-table finish, beginning the campaing as captain, but personally the season was a success as he made 42 League appearances for the Bulls and another eight Cup appearances, chipping in with a single goal against Burton in February 2010. Having been offered a contract extension with the bulls, Kenny put pen to paper on a one year deal in June 2010. He would sign another contract extension the following summer after again helping the club to Football League safety.
