SH: "We weren't complacent"

Academy Manager Steve Holland was pleased to see his side avoid an FA Youth Cup banana skin, with a comprehensive victory over Morecambe at Gresty Road on Monday evening.

Holland's youngsters dominated a potentially tricky encounter with the Conference side, crushing their opponents in the second half as a 1-0 half-time lead was turned into a 5-1 rout to secure a place in the Third Round of the competition which is sponsored by E.On.

"You're on a hiding to nothing in this type of game." Holland told Crewe Alex World as the final whistle blew on an entertaining evening

"If you win then people say 'well you should win' and if you lose they say 'how did you lose that?'

"During the preparation for the game we tried to make the point that these games can be more complicated than they should be. But I didn't think we were complacent and applied ourselves from the start.

"We missed some chances of course and should have been one up in the first minute or two. But the goal just before half-time was crucial I thought, and then we had a 30 minute spell in the second half where I thought we were just a bit too good for them (Morecambe) really."

Brown scored twice and hit the woodwork twice

Junior Brown and Nick Farquharson both bagged braces as they tormented the visitors defence with their movement, trickery and strength, with Brown also hitting the woodwork twice and Farquharson going agonisingly close to what would have been a well deserved hat-trick.

"Junior and Nick haven't played together often up there, but there were some encouraging signs in the second half, that's for sure," Steve said

"They're both very quick, and we've seen in the first team with Varney and Maynard, that pace causes problems and that was certainly the case. They had a little spell in the second half where they looked like they were really enjoying themselves and playing quite freely.

"I think we have a responsibility to the game to encourage that. You don't always want to see the ball chipped into the channel's, it's nice to see a bit of style."
