Crewe Alexandra's youngsters got their new campaign off to a positive start with a 1-1 draw away to Newcastle United. With a host of new scholars joining the squad this summer, a new look outfit made a long trip to Newcastle on Saturday for their first game of the

Newcastle started the game with the best chance which resulted in their goal. A quality run and a fantastic cross sent the ball directly into the box and at the far post the ball was nipped past Crewe keeper Jack Baker.

Although the Geordies had taken the lead it wasn't long before we struck level again. Just before half time a set play began our goal, Luke Danville scooped in a terrific cross which Josh Thompson got on the end of before Ben McHugh finished nicely hitting the ball under the cross bar and into the back of the net.

Thompson had the chance to steal the three points in the second half of the game, in a half that had chances few and far between, but United's keeper was quick off his mark and got to the ball in time to stop it crossing the line.

Much like the first team game, it was a game that could have gone either way, with both teams showing fighting spirit that didn't deserve them to lose the game.
