Youngsters Will Continue To Improve

10 February 2016

Steve Davis says his young players will continue to get better with the experience of League One football.

. Steve Davis believes that his young squad will continue to improve in the remaining few months of the season. The Crewe boss feels that it takes a certain number of his younger players time to adjust to the demands of League One football but once they attain the confidence and belief to express themselves then they become more consistent

Davis has continued to give the club’s Academy graduates their opportunities with the likes of Callum Ainley and Joe Howell making their senior debuts this season. Charlie Kirk was named on the substitutes' bench for the first time against Rochdale at the weekend and the former Alsager youngster Ryan Wintle has already made his professional debut before injury struck.

With the likes of winger George Cooper finding his feet again of late and Callum Saunders continuing to score goals for the Under-21s and in the Cheshire Senior Cup, the future does appear bright.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We have a good nucleus of good young players and they are the future of the club. It is just a question of supplement what they offer us and getting that balance right when we recruit from outside the club.

“If I feel they are good enough and they are ready then I will give them their opportunities. What you do get with young players is that they can be a bit hit and miss. It takes them a bit of time to find that level of consistency.

“What you do see in them is their improvement and we do seem to improve as a team in the second half of the season. It is a trend that has occurred over the last few years. Once we have played everyone they seem to adjust and gain confidence because they know what to expect. It helps them and they become more accustomed to the level.

“It is a close knit group and we haven’t had as many loans this year. At the moment we only have Semi (Ajayi) and now young Ryan (Seager) with us and they have come here determined to do well and become better players and that has only helped us.”
