Young Guns Bode Well For The Future

25 February 2015

Steve Davis impressed with Youth Team progression

First team boss Steve Davis says that the form of the club’s Youth team bodes well for the future. The Alex youngsters recorded a superb 3-2 win over Arsenal at Barnet’s Hive facility on Monday evening to set up an intriguing quarter-final against Manchester City. The game will be played at the club’s Academy Stadium on Monday 2nd March.

Davis has been delighted with the high level of performance in this season’s Youth Cup competition and he is convinced that a few more of Alex Morris’s Under-18s will follow George Cooper into the first team squad.

Steve told crewealex.net: “Our priority at Academy level is to produce players good enough to play in our first team and then hopefully beyond that.

“We hope that at some point some more of them will be good enough to step up into senior football. The Youth Cup shows that they can compete against some of the best young players in the country, but that step up into first-team football is massive for them.

“Judging by what I’ve seen of the Academy and the Youth team, I’m sure we will be taking a few of them and there is a nucleus of technically good players in the team. They all have a good work ethic and it bodes well for their futures.

“These young players are playing for their contracts, their futures at the club and ultimately we have to make some big decision on some of them. I’m sure there will be a number of them who will develop into potential first-team players for the first team here.

He added: “When you beat a team like Arsenal in the Youth Cup, who spend millions on their Academy and producing players, it shows that we must be doing something right here but the prove is always in the ones that go on to have a career in the game.”
