What the press made of the unfortunate defeat

The Sentinel
CREWE were unfortunate to slip to their third consecutive defeat on the road as they were more than a match for Wigan throughout the afternoon.
Michael Jacob’s header in the 12th minute proved decisive, though the Alex protested there had been a push in the build-up.
Brad Inman came within inches of a leveller before the break, seeing his shot cannon back off the inside of the post, while Crewe dominated much of the second period but just couldn’t fashion out what would have been a deserved equalier.

The Chronicle
Crewe Alex’s search for a first win of the season continues after a narrow defeat at Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
Steve Davis’s side impressed for much of the 90 minutes but single goal from Michael Jacobs settled it.
After an even start Wigan took the lead on 12 minutes when a simple corner to the back post saw Jacobs rise unmarked to nod home, although there was suggestion of a foul on George Ray.
Brad Inman hit a post and Stephen Kingsley forced a god save from keeper Richard O’Donnell as the Alex tried to hit back.
But Jacobs was twice brilliantly denied by Alex keeper Ben Garratt as Wigan continued to threaten in what was an open, passing and attractive game.
Latics struck the woodwork through a Will Grigg header soon after the restart and were always dangerous.
But to their credit, the Railwaymen stayed in the game and enjoyed long periods of pressure. They did not work keeper O’Donnell enough but were unfortunate not to get something from the game.

Wigan Today
WIGAN Athletic got their stop-start season back on track against the Railwaymen of Crewe, with Michael Jacobs’ solitary goal proving just the ticket.
But the struggling visitors were increasingly encouraged to get ideas above their station, and made the final quarter of the contest anything but comfortable for the hosts.
