Steve Davis says club couldn't wait for Joe Anyon

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says the club couldn’t stand in the way of goalkeeper Joe Anyon. The former Port Vale and Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper signed a non-contract with Crewe to try and impress enough to win himself a permanent contract with the club.

Anyon was playing catch-up with his fitness after undergoing an operation in the summer and that is why Steve Davis continued to be cautious with him. He was not risked on the Alex bench for the weekend game at Port Vale and didn’t stand in his way when Scunthorpe were prepared to offer him a longer contract.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We couldn’t stand in the way of Joe once Scunthorpe came in for him. They offered him a longer deal and when someone hasn’t been paid for the past six months you have to respect his decision.

“Joe had an operation in the summer and he has been playing catch up with his fitness. We thought he would need another four weeks plus to be ready to go in if needed. He wasn’t ready and he had to be because we could lose Ben at any minute. You just don’t know.

“Joe was a great lad and worked hard. We wish him well.”
