Toots: Sessions Are Crucial

13 June 2013

Matt Tootle on why he actually enjoys coming in during the summer.

Matt Tootle says that attending two sessions a week in the build-up to a return to full training is the best way for players to remain in condition for a demanding season.

The Crewe Alexandra squad return to full training on June 25th but the Alex squad have only enjoyed a small break in the closed season and have been topping up their fitness with weight training sessions and conditioning and core sessions with head of conditioning Andy Franks.

Tootle told the club’s official web-site: “It can be a long hard season and the aim is to play as many games as you possibly can. I played 44 games last season and you have to stay as fit as you can to play at the highest level you can.

“You have to keep focussed and make sure you are doing the right things throughout the season. You have to rest, keep topping up your fitness and eat well.

“Football can be very demanding and we have enough time off. I would much rather be in and working on my fitness and making sure I am really fit for the start of the season. That is what the summer sessions and the friendly games are for.

“We have some exciting games coming up in pre-season and it is something to look forward to.”
