Tootle: "Wolves Were Superior Team"

25 July 2014

Captain hails Wolves record breaking points season

Crewe Alexandra captain Matt Tootle has told the club’s official web-site that it will feel a bit strange facing the League One champions Wolverhampton Wanderers again so soon after facing them here at the Alexandra Stadium back in April.

Kenny Jackett’s side secured promotion back to the Championship that day thanks to a 2-0 win but Crewe faced an uphill struggle after having leading scorer Chuks Aneke sent off on the verge on the half-time break for an alleged elbow on Richard Stearman.

Tootle though is quick to praise Wolves for recording a record 103 points to win the title and instantly return to the second tier.

The club’s Player-of-the-Season told crewealex.net: “It will feel a bit strange playing Wolves again so soon because we only played them in April, on the day they got promoted.

“They were the superior team in our division last season. They were really a Championship team playing in our division and I wasn’t surprised they won the league by a record number of points.

“They were in a different league to the rest of us and have some very good players, so we know it will be a test, like it was back in April.

“The visit of Wolves is our best game in pre-season. When you get closer to the season starting you want to put on a good performance and try and get result to help boost the confidence.

Matt added: “Wolves won’t be coming back down, so this will be a great test for us. They are now a league above and I know their manager (Kenny Jackett) will be looking to push on for the Premier League again.”
