Steve: "We Were Immense"

24 January 2015

Davis proud of his young side as they record historic win at Vale Park

"We can still learn things from today because we can pass the ball better second half and not invite pressure onto ourselves but this result is the for the fans. They made a lot of noise for us behind that goal. They kept us going and it is for them. I'm sure they will have a good night."

"We knew what to expect second half and we struggled to keep the ball as well at certain times in that half, but we had some young players out there and they were immense out there. They haven't had that much experience but they handled the occasion brilliantly and I was proud of them.

"I thought we controlled the first half and created two or three decent chances. We of course, missed the penalty. I think Nicky changed his mind at the last minute after having two penalties not long ago but it was still a good save from Chris Neal. The good thing about Nicky is that he keeps going. He didn't let the penalty miss affect him and Nessy has found him with a superb pass and he has poked it beyond their keeper.

"We were under pressure for the last 20 minutes and the three substitutes certainly made a difference for them. We knew they would have a real go because they have done that this season and have come from behind. We held on and put bodies on the line. They all made blocks, cut crosses out and when he needed to come for them Ben did. It takes the pressure off when he has that ability to come for those high balls.

Following the 1-0 win over the Vale, Steve told crewealex.net: "It was a big win for us and great for the supporters. The main thing was the three points and we got the clean-sheet as well which was pleasing. We wanted to get something from the game after the disappointment of last week at Notts County when we were decent but ended up with nothing. We needed a bit of luck today in the last 20 minutes but I thought we defended well and Ben continues to get better and better. He is still only 20, he is still growing and he is making important saves for us. I wouldn't be surprised if people were looking at him because he is a good, young English goalkeeper.

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis was delighted with his young side as they held on to claim an historic league double over our near neighbours Port Vale. Nicky Ajose slotted home a 39th minute winner at Vale Park as Crewe recorded a first ever league double over the Valiants after previously winning 2-1 win at Gresty Road.
