Steve: "We Showed That Fighting Spirit"

Alex boss gives us his reaction from the Bescot Stadium after a thrilling 2-2 draw

Steve Davis was again left scratching his head over his side’s start to the game at Walsall but was pleased with the reaction of his players as their fighting spirit saw them fight back from 2-0 down to claim a point.

After the 2-2 draw at the Bescot Stadium, Steve told crewealex.net: “We found ourselves 2-0 down before half an hour again and all we had spoken about all week was about the start to the game. We talked to them before the game and then they don’t have to work too hard to score two goals against us.

“Byron (Moore) lost possession trying to dribble across the pitch and we got punished for a poor mistake. They broke on us and he has slotted it past Alan and then for the second goal we didn’t react quickly enough to a cross and he has got in there to score from close range. So we have given ourselves a mountain to climb. I think it must be a case of the players being a bit low on confidence and doubting themselves a bit.

“That happens with younger players and all we can do is work with them and encourage them. We were better for the last 15 minutes of the first half and it was an important time to score. We work hard at our free-kicks and it was a great delivery from Murph. I am sure it has gone straight in although Mark did slide it on it. When we got that goal I thought we could get in at half time and have a real go second half.

“Credit to our lads because they came out and showed that real fighting spirit that we are going to need to pick up points. We were much better, controlled much of the play and kept going. I think it was a penalty on Pogba. I instantly thought that he had been impeded and the referee for whatever reasons hasn’t given it.

“The players didn’t feel sorry for themselves and kept that pressure on and it was a lovely worked goal. Pogs, who I thought was our most potent striker, produced a lovely little turn and produced a delightful cross to the back post and Chuks has got in there to head home in injury time.

Steve added: “It was a well worked goal and I was pleased to see Chuks do that because we have been onto him to be involved in the link up play and then get into the box. He is 6’ 3” and should be getting his head onto crosses so we were delighted for him. I thought we showed enough fight in the second half to have got something from the game today and how we have to go again against Swindon on Tuesday night.”
