A Great Way To End 2013

29 December 2013

Steve delight as Alex end the year on a high

Steve Davis was delighted with the way his spirited side finished 2013. The Alex fought back from a goal down at half time to record just their second away win of the season thanks to second half goals from Chuks Aneke and Tom Hitchcock and it was no more than they deserved after a rallying second half display. Following the 2-1 win at Colchester, Steve told crewealex.net: “It was a performance of real determination and spirit and I was delighted with the performance, especially in the second half.

“We made a real slow start to the game and it took us a while to get going but we finally did after they scored. The free-kick took a wicked deflection and went into the opposite corner that Ben was covering and there was nothing we could do about that. It just about summed up our good fortune and luck of late but they deserved their goal for the way they had started.

“We started to get the ball down and play some football and Tom and Brad had some half chances in the final 20 minutes of the first half. We got them in at half-time and had a bit of a rallying cry because we all thought we could be better and get something from the game.

“I just said to them that we had endured a miserable last four months or so lets go out and try and end the year on a high for everyone. I wanted them to go out and put on a performance and to comeback for the first time this season is a brilliant start on what we need to do. We have to start to get results and it was vital that we got something from this game after we lost at wolves on Boxing Day.

“It is great for the confidence and now we can’t wait for the next game against Carlisle to come around on New Years’ Day. It is amazing what a result can do and this has to be a turning point for us.

“We came out in the second half and played some terrific football. We caused them problems, were a threat and created openings. I thought they should have gone down to ten men when the lad bought Tom down as I didn’t think anyone was covering him and he was the last man but those things go against you and it seemed to give our players even more of a lift because it felt that everything was going against us, with the deflected goal as well.

He added: “We scored two good goals and Tom has been terrific for us. He has scored three goals in four games and you cannot ask for more than that from him. Now we have to take this into the next game.”
