Steve: "Three Points The Main Thing"

Boss gives us his reaction to 2-1 win over Hartlepool

Boss Steve Davis was happy to see his side get back to winning ways after the Alex bounced back from two defeats on the trot to record a 2-1 win over Hartlepool United at Gresty Road.

It wasn’t easy for the Alex who survived several scares in a nervy game. Hartlepool took the lead early on through substitute Evan Horwood, before goals from Chuks Aneke and Mark Ellis sealed the win for Crewe.

Crewe could have in fact won more comfortable had Mathias Pogba netted a first-half penalty, something which left Davis angry, but in the end 2-1 was enough to seal Crewe’s first victory since September 1st.

Speaking after the game, Steve said: “The three points is the main thing especially when you have lost back-to-back home games. That was the most important thing because we have got two tough away games to come.

“The lads dug in. I will have to see their goal again because I wasn’t quite sure what happened but it looked a bit too easy. Credit to the players though because they got themselves going but we just couldn’t get that goal until right on half-time. It was worth waiting for though because it was a great first-time effort from Chuks.

"In the second half it was about getting that winning goal. I think we pushed to the extreme where we hanging on a little bit, but we did get that goal. We had practiced set plays late yesterday and I am pleased one has come off, because we have come close on several occasions.

“In fairness to Hartlepool, they could have probably got something from the game, and probably deserved something from the game. We wobbled a bit at the end, but the result was important today and I am pleased with that.”

On the penalty miss, Steve added: “I was shouting over to Murph to get Harry to take it, but Murph was reluctant to switch the taker that late. As long as he scored I was fine with that, but I have learnt from that and it won’t happen again. I am the one that should make the big decisions and that was a big decision.”
