Steve: "We Showed Real Spirit"

25 October 2014

Steve Davis gives us his post-match reaction after incident packed game against the Blades.

Steve Davis says he couldn't fault his players work ethic and spirit to try and keep our unbeaten run going. Despite losing George Ray to a red card with just over five minutes remaining, the Railwaymen gave it a real go in the closing stages to try and snatch a draw.

Following the 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United, the Alex boss told the club's official web-site: "We showed a lot of spirit and worked hard to try and get something from the game. I never thought we controlled the game, I thought they controlled periods of the game more than we did, without really creating too many chances. They hit the woodwork when the ball bounced into the ground from the set play so we got a bit lucky there. They didn't cause us too many problems. They didn't really open us up.

"We didn't open them up on too many occasions either. We didn't create too much in their final third either but I thought we might nick a 0-0 or a 1-1 late on. I would have been more than happy to have done that today.

"We showed some great spirit in the last ten minutes and pushed on. We took some risks and tried to nick something. If I'm honest I thought they were slightly better than us and I am always honest about the opposition as well. There was a lot of graft from us but we just lacked that quality today. Perhaps it was one game too many this week for us and we couldn't quite pull it off.

"The penalty came about because George didn't know where the player was and it is something for him to learn from. We have seen that before from him. I was unsure what happened with George when he was sent off. I am not sure if it was something he said or that he put his hand on him. I haven't seen the incident back and I will have to see it again. Either way you cannot do it, that's not our style and the frustration got the better of him. He is still learning and a harsh one for him to learn.

He added: "Brad has concussion and has been sent to hospital for a check-up. He caught the lad with his head and his neck has jerked back and he went down. He wasn't cut. The clash has caused some disruption with his neck and we will know a bit more in the next 24 hours."
