Steve gives us his reaction from Stevenage after thriller

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis praised his players for their efforts after they had to see out the final 20 minutes after Chucks Aneke was red carded for a clumsy more than malicious challenge on Anthony Grant. The Alex manager says he will look at the incident again on the DVD before deciding whether to appeal the decision or not. Aneke would face a three-match suspension and Davis says the sending off changed the complexion of the game late on.

Davis told the club’s official web-site: “I thought it was a really good game with both teams at it. It was a good spectacle and we were excellent in those opening ten minutes. We were unstoppable and AJ scored two great goals. We know he can finish and it is just a question of him doing it over 90 minutes. That is the challenge for him because he seems to tire.

“After going 2-0 up early on, I thought we sat off them a bit when we should have continued to take the game to them more. They were vulnerable then and we should have pushed for a third goal.

“They got back into it with a great strike of their own. It was a great shot into the left corner to be fair and then it was a case of us getting to half-time without conceding again.

“I thought we defended well and the centre-halves were immense and solid and I couldn’t see them scoring that second goal. Other than tipping a couple of shots over and handling some crosses, Alan Martin didn’t have that much to do.

“The sending off was the game changer. I thought that Chucks may have slipped more than anything and I will have a look at it again on the way home to see if we will appeal it. I didn’t think it was malicious and I’m not sure his two feet left the ground. If we think we can appeal then we will.

“That next goal was going to be vital and we did look a threat on the break, but they managed to get it and then it was a question of digging in a bit and making sure we didn’t get beaten. The players have that in their character. They play up to that underdog tag and don’t give up. They got their rewards and I thought we deserved at least a point.

“The referee did well, I thought he was very strong and he made the right decision at the end to disallow the goal. I am not sure he knew who it had hit and once he knew that it come off their player and then dropped to him in an offside position, he spoke to his assistant and made the right call. That is good refereeing and he made the right decision. I thought that apart from a couple of decisions he was fantastic.”
