Steve: "Errors Have Cost Us Again"

18 January 2014

Davis disappointed his players got nothing for their efforts

Despite a 2-1 home defeat to promotion chasing Leyton Orient, Steve Davis praised his players again after another gallant effort, but he was left disappointed with the two goals we conceded to the Leyton Orient sub Chris Dagnall after taking the lead through Byron Moore's tap in after some great work from Chuks Aneke. Video replays' perhaps show that Aneke's shot that looped up off the gloves of Eldin Jakupovic and onto the post may have gone in without a decisive touch from Moore. "Dagnall was clinical with his finishing again but we had opportunities to clear and we have got to eradicate those mistakes against good players like Orient have in their forward line or you will get punished."

"We have lost our concentration and it has cost us the two goals. The first one, Dagnall has got in behind Mark Ellis and Dagnall has done that at this level before. He is clinical. We keep telling them and we can only continue to do the work with them but we were disappointed with the goals we have conceded.

"We needed to build on that and we didn't. I don't know why and I have said to some of them afterwards that some of them become a bit nervous in that situation. Perhaps it is going a goal up and having to defend against a good side. What we need to do is remain strong, keep our concentration and be responsible for their jobs.

"I didn't think we deserved that because apart from their two goals I don't think they have have created too many chances. It was fairly even in the first half when it comes to the chances and there was not a lot in it. I thought we started to look threatening and got the goal at a good time.

For all their effort, especially in the last 20 minutes of the game, Crewe had nothing to show at the end of a pulsating 90 minutes at Gresty Road. After the game, the Alex boss Steve Davis told crewealex.net: "I  thought we good again and deserved something from it because I didn't think there was much between the two sides. It was one of those games that could have gone either way and it has swung their way because of two errors we have made at the back. That has been our Achilles heal all season and we have not kept enough clean-sheets this season.
