Boss looking for positive reaction after poor home display

Steve Davis says his players have to get over last night’s disappointing defeat to Oldham Athletic as quickly as possible and make sure we bounce back against Hartlepool United on Saturday. The Alex boss criticised his side’s performance in the 2-0 defeat but took nothing away from Oldham’s high-energy display at Gresty Road. The Latics deserved the points but Davis was left ruing mistakes at the back.

Davis told crewealex.net: “That is probably as poor a performance as Brentford and we haven’t had that many since I took over. It is probably the worst we have played at home for about a year and if I had come along to watch the performance I wouldn’t have been too impressed.

“We never got going and were second best on the night. We had too many players below par and Oldham worked hard for their manager.

“I’ve always said that we are going to have some blips because every game at this level is an education for our young players. Saying that we had a chat afterwards and they know they have got to be better than that. We cannot afford to carry too many players.

“Now it is about how they react. I’m not one for looking back. We have to remain positive, take what we need from the game and move on. I want the players to enjoy winning games again and take it from there.

He added: “Although we wouldn’t have deserved it, we could have got a goalless draw. We made two mistakes with Kelvin not tracking his man at a corner and then Gregor not clearing the danger probably, so it was even more disappointing for us.”
