Steve Davis gives us his post-match reaction at Oakwell following 2-0 win
I am delighted with the performance and for all the boys. We controlled large aspects of the game and looked dangerous with our front three combining well and giving Vadaine Oliver a bit more support. Following the Capital One Cup win at his former club, Steve Davis told crewealex.net: "
Steve Davis was pleased that his hard working Crewe Alexandra side were rewarded for their efforts with a 2-0 win at Barnsley this evening. Goals from Billy Waters and captain Matt Tootle, with five minutes left on the clock, sealed a first round win that now sees Crewe in the hat for the draw on Wednesday evening.
“The defence were sound and solid even though you expect them to have a few efforts here. We knew it would be a test, so to come here and play like that was really pleasing and I was proud of every one of them.
“We did okay on Saturday at Fleetwood but we have gone on a step tonight and have shown what we are capable of.
“I am pleased for Billy for him to get his first goal. He could have had a couple before he scored the one he did. Vadaine did well to nod the ball back and credit to Billy because he is always on that front foot inside the six-yard box. He was there to read it and finish it off. He worked hard throughout and was dangerous again and he was involved in the second goal as well.
“The second goal was a swift counter attack and we know that Tootle likes to get forward and overlap. He showed great energy to get forward and it was a great finish. We know he can do that and drilled it low past the goalkeeper. He had no chance.
“It is great for him. He is buzzing in the dressing room and showing what a great leader he is. He missed the penalty on Saturday which could have got us back into the game but he worked his socks off again and this was his pay back for that. He has repaid that and he was magnificent for us again this evening.”
