Steve: "The Better Team Lost The Game"

3 October 2015

Steve Davis felt Crewe didn't get what they deserved against Chesterfield.

"We ain't winning games because we are making those mistakes at the back and we are not clinical enough to score two or three goals a game. Collectively we haven't defended well and kept the ball out of net but there were some positives from the game. They gave everything they had and we looked dangerous at times. I cannot fault their effort and I was pleased in terms of their effort and determination. "

"There is no magic formula, it isn't suddenly turn around without the hard work, effort and belief. The players were giving us everything they could today and it is just not happening for us at the moment. We just are not getting that rub of the green to help us get those results.

"We are having to score more than one goal at home to even think about getting anything from the game and we cannot do that, but I won't be too critical of them because they were some really good performances from us out there.

"We caused them problems, had some shots that were blocked and had some really good chances as well. We were fine second half as well but the second goal was another disappointing one to concede. The ball has travelled from one side of the pitch to the other to reach the far post without anyone cutting it out, we have got to get our heads on things there, and it has gone through to Garner at the far post with Ollie not close enough to him. They were two really poor goals but we have said that too many times.

After the final whistle, the Alex boss told crewealex.net: "I was positive with the players in there because I thought we played some good football today. I  thought the better team lost today. I thought we played particularly well first half after conceding a poor goal. We didn't mark well enough inside the box and it set us back from their first real attack - but I thought the players responded well and got going. We could perhaps have done with another 10 minutes of the first half because we equalised and looked like scoring again. It finished a little bit too early for us.

Steve Davis was hugely disappointed with the two goals we conceded this afternoon against Chesterfield, but he believes that the better side on the day lost after his Crewe side played some really good football at times. Dan Gardner scored Chesterfield's two goals after really miss hitting both of his shots, the first deflecting off Ollie Turton and the second hitting the ground and looping over Ben Garratt to leave the Railwaymen dressing room in disbelief.
