Alex boss gives us his post-match thoughts from the Greenhous Meadow after first win of the season

Steve added: "The supporters need to know that the staff here are working five, six days a week to improve this group of players and make them better. The players have never let their confidence or belief drop and now we have to use this as a platform to build on."

"I said to the players on Friday that we needed to give the fans something to shout about. We have played well at times this season but haven't won so that was for them today. We knew it was a local derby and what it means to the fans. We knew we would be well supported behind that goal and I'm sure they will have a better journey home and a better Saturday night.

"They all worked extremely hard, made those blocks and were disciplined throughout the game. We were harder to beat and Shrewsbury found it hard to get through. Sometimes you have to grind those results out and I was delighted for everyone connected with the club.

"It was another good finish from Adam. He has a knack of coming inside and firing those shots off with his left foot. He our top scorer with four goals from midfield and he is invaluable for us at the moment. That gave us something to build on coming so early but after 15/20 minutes they began to dominate the game and I was half expecting them to score an equaliser before half time but we managed to see it through and I decided to change the shape and go with three at the back. It is the first time I have done that this season but we had to match them up and stop their wing-backs from having that space.

Following the 1-0 win, Steve told the club's official web-site: "It was a hard game and it wasn't pretty by us at times  but we had to do that nitty gritty side of the game to grind out a result. We didn't do as well as I would have liked in possession at times and we gave the ball away cheaply at times, but as a defensive unit we were immaculate. We defended extremely well and I thought we restricted them to half chances really.

The Alex boss was delighted with the way we stood firm in defence and continued to look a threat on the counter attack with Colclough and Haber also having good chances.

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis praised his players after they worked immensely hard to record that first win of the season at Shrewsbury. Crewe took the lead through Adam King in the opening minute and kept the Shrews out to collect those precious three points.
